An online coupon for free shipping at Kohl’s and a printable coupon for 20% off a total purchase at Gap were the most popular coupons for the second straight month in January 2010, according to [pdf] coupon aggregator RetailMeNot, which recently released its coupon data report for the month. RetailMeNot’s report on top monthly coupons separately reports its online and printable-coupon savings numbers. Overall, consumers saved about $58.9 million online from the launch of RetailMeNot’s coupon data report in April 2009 until the end of January 2010. Printable coupon users have saved about $12.8 million during that time, downloading 2.56 million coupons. January 2010 coupon traffic measured 14.68 million users, a 61% increase from 9.1 million users in January 2009. During the month, online coupon users generated about $34 million in sales, a 61% jump from $21.1 million in January 2009. There were 376,090 online coupons available for 58,667 retailers, and 58,667 printable coupons available for 52,000 stores.

Other Findings

Victoria’s Secret, Amazon and Domino’s were the three most-searched stores for online coupons. Domino’s replaced Best Buy, which slipped to ninth place, in the number three spot. Fantastic Sam’s, Dave and Buster’s, and Kentucky Fried Chicken were the top three searched printable brands. Fantastic Sam’s moved up from the second spot, displacing December’s number one printable brand Kentucky Fried Chicken to number three. Dave and Buster’s moved up from number five, and previous number two printable band Stanley Steemer fell to number six. The top three printable categories searched were food, apparel and restaurant. Food jumped from number five, pushing previous number one apparel to the second spot. Restaurant climbed from seventh place, pushing previously tied third place printable categories clothing and oil change to fourth and fifth place, respectively. The 63038 ZIP Code in Glencoe, MO moved up from fifth to first place. Last month’s top-ranked ZIP Code, 75034 in Frisco, TX, fell to number seven. The top three states using printable coupons were New Jersey, Minnesota and New York. New Jersey and New York maintained their December 2009 rankings, but Minnesota moved from sixth to second place, swapping places with previous number two state Connecticut. The top three states using online coupons were New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey, a repeat of December 2009’s rankings.

Digital Coupon Growth Outpaces Inserts

During 2009, the growth rate of digital coupons outpaced the typical annual growth rate of free standing insert (FSI) coupons by a factor of more than 10-1, according to Coupons.com. Coupons.com annual data indicates that savings US consumers obtained from digital coupons grew 170% in 2009, compared to a typical annual growth rate of 8-16% for FSI coupons. Printed savings from Coupons.com and the Coupons.com digital coupon network in 2009 exceeded $858 million, a 170% increase from more than $300 million in 2008. According to Coupons.com, key factors influencing the growth included increased consumer adoption of online printable, save to store loyalty card and mobile coupons and increased use of digital coupons by brand marketers, including manufacturers and retailers alike.
