Video Game Retailer Adds Franchise Developers

Gamer Doc, a privately-held franchiser of video game retail stores that launched in 2007, is developing stores in the Raleigh, N.C., Northern Virginia, Atlanta, GA, Miami, St. Petersburg and Orlando, FL, Orange County, CA, Philadelphia, PA and Toronto, ON areas. Last month, Gamer Doc said it would add four franchise store locations this year - one franchise location in Los Angeles, CA and three franchise locations in Delaware. Gamer Doc stores feature themed centers for specific video game systems such as Xbox, PlayStation and Wii, selling games, consoles and accessories. The retailer buys, rents, sells and trades in games, and also offers repair services. In addition, Gamer Doc sells HD flat-panel monitors and cables and allows customers to interactively play games and receive information and training from personnel in stores. Gamer Doc is opening new locations as the video game market proves to be one of the few bright spots for in-store sales at major consumer entertainment retailer Blockbuster. Blockbuster recently reported increases in same-store sales for Q4 and fiscal 2008, despite overall declines in profits and revenues. The retailer cited increases in games, game merchandise and consumer electronics as largely driving same-store sales performance. Blockbuster opened a game-themed concept store in The Colony, TX in May 2008. Gamer Doc currently operates five stores located in Los Angeles, CA Bear, DE, Miami, FL, Springfield, PA, and Burlington, ON. Blockbuster operates 11 stores within four miles of GamerDoc’s Los Angeles store; 15 stores within eight miles of its Bear store; five stores within four miles of its Miami store; five stores within four miles of its Springfield store; and five stores in Burlington, ON. In the new areas where Gamer Doc is expanding, Blockbuster operates 15 stores in the Raleigh area, 13 stores in the Northern Virginia area, 13 stores in the Atlanta area, 14 stores in the St. Petersburg area, 14 stores in the Orlando area, 14 stores in the Orange County area, 15 stores in the Philadelphia area, and 23 stores in the Toronto area.
