McDonald’s Tinkers With Canadian Big Mac

McDonald’s Canadian locations are running a limited-time promotion that offers the chain’s signature Big Mac sandwich as a snack-sized tortilla. According to QSR Magazine, participating McDonald’s restaurants in Canada are offering the “Mac Snack Wrap” menu item on March 17 and 18, 2009. The Mac Snack Wrap is a smaller version of the Big Mac cheeseburger item, with the same toppings, wrapped in a flour tortilla instead of placed on a hamburger bun. The Mac Snack Wrap retails for CAD $1.89 plus tax, or about USD $1.48 plus tax. The Mac Snack Wrap is the first McDonald’s menu item to feature beef in a snack-sized portion. Canadian McDonald’s locations currently offer other snack wrap items featuring chicken meat. While the Mac Snack Wrap is currently a limited two-day promotion restricted to Canada, it follows a number of successful McDonald’s experiments with menu and décor in 2008, including healthier menu items, a dollar menu, premium coffee beverages, in-store WiFi services and in-store flat-screen TVs and video games. McDonald’s was one of two companies in the Dow-Jones industrial average, along with Wal-Mart, to see its share value increase in 2008. Competitor Burger King has also recently launched a number of experiments with its menu and décor. Burger King currently has 45 new menu items in different stages of testing, and also recently launched an upscale Whopper Bar concept that features made-to-order sandwiches with a store design that resembles a café more than a traditional fast-food restaurant. McDonald’s operates more than 1,400 locations in Canada, including non-traditional locations such as McDonald’s Wal-Mart. More than 77,000 employees work in McDonald’s Canadian operation.
