McDonald’s Targets SoCal Coffee Fans

More than 600 franchised and company-owned McDonald’s restaurants in Southern California are targeting coffee fans with a new online locator for restaurants featuring McCafe specialty coffees. The McDonald’s Operators’ Association of Southern California (MOASC), which consists of more than 600 franchised and company-owned McDonald’s outlets in the Southern California counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura, is making the locator tool available on its website. Currently, more than 150 McDonald’s outlets in Southern California are selling McCafe specialty coffees, whose launch last year is partially credited for McDonald’s strong overall 2008 performance. McCafe coffees include hot and iced lattes and mochas, and cappuccinos in a variety of flavors and sizes, made with either whole or skim milk. Premium roast drip coffee and hot chocolate are also available. Prices vary by restaurant. According to the recent Brand Keys Customer Loyalty Engagement Index, McDonald’s is now the second-most-popular coffee retailer in the US, behind top-place finisher Dunkin’ Donuts but ahead of third-place finisher Starbucks, who reported disappointing quarterly earnings, store closings and layoffs in January 2009. Dunkin’ Donuts does not currently operate in the Southern California area, although the retailer has announced it will aggressively seek to open franchises in new locations around the country during the next few years. Recent areas targeted for franchise expansion include St. Louis, MO and Savannah, GA. Starbucks operates in the Southern California market.
