Discount Retailers Report Mixed September Results

Costco Sales Up 9% in August
August gas prices were 40% higher than the same period a year earlier, helping to boost Costco’s US same-store sales by three full percentage points to reach 9% (via Marketwire).
International same-store sales growth increased 6% but was negatively affected by foreign exchange rates. On a local currency basis, international comparable sales increased 8% in August.

Costco Keeps Pricing Low, Making Stockholders Nervous
To keep sales levels high, Costco is keeping its prices low even amid soaring costs, but it risks angering stockholders as a result of lower profit margins, MarketWatch reports.

Costco is the No. 1 consumer choice for loyalty in the Grocery, Personal Care and Mass Merchant categories, and Macy’s is the top-ranked department store, according to COLLOQUY’s Retail Loyalty Index.
